Downton Abbey

Visiting Hampshire: a set-jetting guide

Hampshire is rolling farmland and grand country estates an hour west of London, crowned by the Jacobean pile that became Downton Abbey itself. For fans of the series, the destination is really one house: Highclere Castle, whose honey-stoned facade and sweeping grounds are the Abbey, and whose saloon, library and bedrooms served as the family's actual interiors across every series. To stand in the real saloon is to stand inside the show, not a set built to resemble it.

Highclere is a living home, which shapes how you visit. It opens to the public only on selected dates from spring to autumn and over Christmas, and tickets sell out fast, so booking online well ahead is essential rather than optional. It is about ninety minutes from London by car, or a train to Newbury followed by a short taxi, and the house, its grounds and the Egyptian exhibition in the cellars together make a satisfying day.

That Egyptian collection is more than a curiosity: it nods to the real archaeological history of the family who still live here, a thread of fact running beneath the fiction. Give yourself time for the cellars as well as the state rooms, and for the grounds, where the cedar-dotted parkland is every bit as recognisable as the building. The nearby town of Newbury has plenty of lunch options if you would rather eat off the estate.

Highclere is the draw, but it is also a gateway to a green day out from the capital. The surrounding Hampshire downs and quiet market towns make easy, unhurried add-ons once you have had your fill of the house, turning a single-sight pilgrimage into a proper country excursion. Aim for the open season, book your slot the moment dates are released, and treat the drive through the downs as part of the pleasure rather than the means to it.
