Filming The Odyssey: locations and how to visit
Shot in IMAX and released in 2026, Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey brings Homer's ancient tale of a soldier's long journey home to real coasts and deserts rather than a studio backlot. The production followed the sea from North Africa to Greece and Italy, choosing landscapes that still carry the weather and light the poem describes.
In Morocco, the earthen towers of Aït Benhaddou near Ouarzazate stand in for walled Troy, while the broad Atlantic beach below Essaouira becomes the shore of departure. In Messenia, in the Greek Peloponnese, the pale crescent of Voidokilia and the sea-fort of Methoni near Pylos give the hero his sunlit homeland. Off western Sicily, the hilltop fort of Favignana in the Egadi Islands lends its wind-scoured heights to the tale of the winds.
For a set-jetting trip, these sites gather into a few easy bases: Ouarzazate for the desert kasbahs, Essaouira for the Atlantic, and Pylos for Messenia, with Favignana a short ferry from Trapani.
