Filming locations in Peak District

England's first national park, a sweep of gritstone edges and stately homes in the heart of the country, where a grand house played Pemberley and a windy crag framed a heroine lost in thought. Chatsworth and the moors above Hathersage pair into one classic day.

Pride & Prejudice

Visiting Peak District: a set-jetting guide

The Peak District gave the 2005 Pride & Prejudice two of its most enduring images, one all grandeur and one all weather. Joe Wright's adaptation made a Derbyshire estate its Pemberley and sent its heroine to brood on a windswept gritstone edge, and the two pair perfectly into a single classic day.

Chatsworth House is the grand half. This palatial estate stands in for Pemberley, the home whose splendour helps turn Elizabeth's head, and its sculpture gallery appears in the film's interiors. It is a stately home with ticketed entry to the house, gardens and parkland, open for most of the year, though the grounds alone make a fine visit if you would rather stay outdoors.

Stanage Edge is the wild half. The long gritstone cliff above Hathersage is where Elizabeth stands lost in thought on a rocky outcrop in one of the film's signature shots. It is free and open moorland, reached by a short uphill walk from roadside parking, so come prepared for wind and weather; the ridge repays you with huge views over the Hope Valley.

The two sit close enough to chain together, both in the heart of the Peak District near the market town of Bakewell. Base yourself in or around Bakewell and you can do Chatsworth's house and gardens in the morning and the edge in the afternoon.

Two small pleasures round out the day. The village of Hathersage below the edge has cafés and a swimming pool, and Bakewell is famous for its tart, the obvious reward after a windy walk on Stanage.
