Filming locations in Extremadura

Extremadura is a sun-bleached region of walled towns and conquistador palaces in western Spain, and its untouched medieval centres became the capital of a dragon-riding dynasty. House of the Dragon built much of its King's Landing here, leaning on stonework so well preserved that the crews barely needed to dress it. The two anchor towns, Caceres and Trujillo, sit a short drive apart, which makes the whole Targaryen capital a comfortable day by car.

The headline is Caceres Old Town, whose walled medieval quarter of towers, palaces and stone lanes doubled directly as the streets of King's Landing. It is free to wander, with some palaces and towers charging small entry fees, and it is compact and best explored on foot. Time your visit for golden hour, when the low sun sets the stone glowing, and allow a half day to lose yourself in lanes that needed almost no scenery added to play a capital city.

Forty-five minutes east, Trujillo offers the second half of the story. Its Moorish hilltop castle and the grand arcaded Plaza Mayor below featured as parts of the Targaryen capital and its surroundings. A small entry fee gets you up into the castle that crowns the town, and the climb through Trujillo's old streets is half the pleasure. Save the ramparts for sunset, when the light spills out over the plains beyond.

This is a destination that rewards a car and an unhurried pace, since the magic is in the texture of the stone and the quiet of the lanes rather than any single monument. Pair Caceres and Trujillo across one full day, build in long pauses for the plazas, and let the heat of the afternoon push you toward shade and a slow lunch. Come in spring or autumn to walk the walled towns without the fierce midsummer sun.
