Filming locations in Carpathian Mountains

Forested mountains and Belle Époque resort towns in the Romanian Carpathians, where a neo-Gothic castle on a wooded slope became a certain academy for outcasts. Bușteni and the Prahova Valley are a couple of hours from Bucharest, with cable cars up to high alpine plateaus.

Wednesday

Visiting Carpathian Mountains: a set-jetting guide

The Romanian Carpathians gave Wednesday its Nevermore Academy, and seeing the place in person explains the casting at a glance. The school for outcasts is Cantacuzino Castle, a neo-Gothic pile on a wooded mountain slope above the resort town of Bușteni, all turrets and terraced gardens against a wall of forest.

The castle is the heart of any set-jetting trip here. It opens daily with paid entry and runs a popular Nevermore-themed exhibition, so book timed tickets in summer when fans of the series descend. Wandering its grounds and terraces, you stand exactly where Wednesday Addams trades deadpan barbs and untangles a murderous mystery.

What lifts the visit beyond the castle is the setting. Bușteni sits in the Prahova Valley, a couple of hours north of Bucharest by road or train, and the mountains rise dramatically all around. From town a cable car climbs to the high Bucegi plateau, where the alpine air and sweeping ridges feel a world away from the Gothic gloom below.

Up on that ridge stands the Caraiman cross, Romania's highest summit monument, a startling sight on the skyline above the valley. Between the castle, the cable car and the plateau, a day here pairs the screen pilgrimage with genuine mountain country, the kind of contrast that makes a set-jetting trip more than a photo stop.

Practically, treat Bușteni as your base and Bucharest as the gateway. Come up for at least a full day, take the castle in the morning before the queues build and the plateau in the afternoon, and pack layers, because the weather on the heights turns quickly even when the valley is mild.
