No Time to Die

Visiting Atlantic Road: a set-jetting guide

The same Bond film that tore through Matera ends its travels on the far side of Europe, on a road that barely seems to belong to the mainland. No Time to Die staged a storm-lashed Norwegian chase along the Atlantic Ocean Road, the ribbon of low bridges that hops from islet to islet off Norway's western coast.

The location is the road itself, the Atlanterhavsvegen. Its few spectacular kilometres of bridges leaping between skerries feature in the film's high-speed pursuit, and the whole point is simply to drive it. Laybys and viewing platforms line the route, and the road is at its wildest in the autumn storms, when sea spray breaks right over the tarmac.

There is nothing to queue for and no ticket to buy; this is a free public road you experience from behind the wheel and on foot at the stops. Pull in at the Storseisundet bridge viewpoint for the classic curling shot, and walk out onto the fishing platforms that line the route for a properly windswept stretch of your legs.

Practically, the road links small islands near the towns of Kristiansund and Molde, so base yourself in either and fold the drive into a wider loop of Norway's fjord-and-island coast. Pick a day with some weather in the forecast and the place rewards you with exactly the drama Bond came for.
